TheLives

Terrain

The terrain in TheLives is a 64 by 64 grid, thus having 4096 locations for a critter to live. Each location, called a block, is 16 square meters large. This gives the whole universe in TheLives a size of 65.5 square kilometers. A location in the universe is specified in a tuple, as [block_x, block_y, square].

Each block can be one of two specific topical features: land or water. For example, a block may be a mountain, and thus can have a specific height. Or a block can be a water body, and thus have a depth.

Critters

Citizens in TheLives are called critters. They have a huge host of characteristics and parameters that control their behaviors. They interact with their environment: the terrain and other critters. There are three factors that influence the behavior of a critter:

  1. Each critter has DNA, a build in set of instructions that give him a basic personality, for example: hostile, fertile, friendly, etc. These instructions are set in stone, and are immutable.
  2. The expression of a specific genotype can be overridden by learned traits. A learned trait is a set of characteristics that a critter learns over time, mainly from his society.
  3. The mood of the critter can change how a critter behaves. For example, if the critter is in a “bad” mood, which may influence his personal space limits and thus he would be less likely to move into a square or block with a lot of other critters in it.

A critter’s behavior is decided by working bottom up. So, for example if a critter were lacking food, his Level 1 behaviors (DNA) would instruct him to forage, and if there were no problem with his social learning or his mood (Level’s 2 and 3), then he would try to forage. However, if Level 1 and 2 were ON for hunger, but he was depressed, the Level 3 behavior would override the Level 1 and 2 behaviors.

Listed below are the characterizes that govern how a critter interacts in his society. If it fits into a Behavioral Level, it has been noted.
